Industrial Equipment Mechanic

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel in the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: As Industrial Equipment Mechanic you will perform the installation maintenance, modification testing, overhaul and repair of complicated stationary engineering boiler and boiler feed water equipment and facilities including complete plants and distribution equipment and piping. Interpret instructions – manufacturers or local – for installation and operation of equipment. Independently perform necessary modifications and fabrications to equipment to include substitution condensers, tanks or pumps to meet specific needs, altering agitators, lines, valves, tubing and piping, changing pumps and adapting feeder lines and associated equipment for transferring water and wastewater throughout the installation. Inspect facilities/equipment regularly to ensure proper function on, or to diagnose trouble. Replace bearings, bushings, seals, shafts, filters, gears and gearboxes. Search for system leaks by air pressurization As required, remove and decontaminate components, test runs reassembled parts/systems to ensure correct fits, tolerances and operation. Replace defective or work parts and equipment often require the fabrication of parts of which are obsolete or unavailable. Fabrication required. Provide urgent repairs that the mechanic is frequently required to improvise or to redesign existing systems or components. Provide equipment mechanic and pipefitting skills, plus the ability to use these skills in improvising and designing parts and systems used in chemical process technology. Requires acetylene/electric/welding, sheet metal and iron working, carpentry and rigging skill work. Operates the following equipment: tool lathes, grinders, drill presses, saws, bending machines, pipe machines, gas and electric welders, hand power tools and various carpentry tools. Applies shop mathematics to operate tools and to determine the problem solving of equipment repairs. Response to emergency situations without benefit of supervisory guidance and bring resolution to the problem. Apply safety, surety, and environmental regulations and procedures. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Industrial Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Have the ability to perform common tasks such as including: 1. Perform the installation maintenance, modification testing, overhaul and repair of complicated stationary engineering boiler and boiler feed water equipment and facilities including complete plants and distribution equipment and piping.and associated components following well-established procedures and detailed instructions. 2. Receives assignments with clear, step-by-step instructions and carries them out using diagrams, technical manuals, and guidance from higher-grade mechanics. 3. Troubleshoots basic equipment failures using standard diagnostic guides and replaces common components such as filters, small valves, gaskets, basic fittings, and minor pump assemblies.4. Assists higher-grade mechanics with complex repair, modification, or installation projects. 5. Performs preparatory or support tasks such as disassembly, cleaning, or simple component replacement. 6. Performs basic pipefitting tasks, including cutting, measuring, joining, and threading pipes according to established layout instructions. 7. Operates basic shop tools and equipment, including hand tools, small power tools, grinders, and drill presses under supervision. 8. Weld very simple or non-critical tasks. 9. Follow all safety regulations and uses required protective equipment. 10. Follows chemical surety protocols. Works under close supervision, with frequent review of work in progress and upon completion. Unusual or difficult tasks are escalated to higher-grade mechanics. • Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Other job elements: Ability to do the work of the Position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments. Ability to Interpret Instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting reading). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of Materials. Physical Effort: Work in awkward or cramped positions when performing operations and making repairs. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required while checking the storage areas and equipment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and larger, bulky loads with the use of mechanical devices. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside with minimum protection against the elements. Must wear protective clothing such as gloves and rubber boots most of the time. There is exposure to noise from equipment as well as dirt, dust, grease, burns, cuts and bruises.
