# Principal Embedded Software Engineer

Lexington Medical, Inc.

Lexington Medical, Inc. is hiring a Principal Embedded Software Engineer in Bedford, MA to develop embedded software for surgical stapling devices. You will build and own embedded software controlling a complex electromechanical surgical stapling system, while setting the architecture and technical standards that guide the platform longer term. About Lexington Medical Lexington Medical, Inc. is a medical device company designing and manufacturing surgical stapling technology at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Our AEON™ Endostapler is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive surgical stapler used in operating rooms around the world. With engineering, manufacturing, and quality working closely together, engineers stay close to the product and see their work move from an idea through prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and ultimately into the operating room. About the Role As a Principal Embedded Software Engineer at Lexington Medical, you will own embedded software architecture while remaining an active individual contributor. You will write production code, integrate drivers, debug at the hardware level, and work at the bench alongside electrical and mechanical engineers. The software operates under tight real-time and safety-critical constraints and directly controls electromechanical actuation and sensing. You will help solve the problems that appear where software meets actual hardware, while also establishing the technical direction, development practices, and software quality standards for the platform. This role is designed for a principal-level engineer who wants the scope and influence of a technical leader without moving away from engineering itself. Responsibilities Design, build, and integrate real-time embedded software for Lexington Medical's surgical stapling platform and supporting devices, primarily using ARM Cortex-M or equivalent microcontroller-based systems. Define and evolve the embedded software architecture, including major structural decisions, technical tradeoffs, and longer-term platform direction. Write production C and C++ code as an active contributor to core embedded systems. Develop and debug low-level drivers, communication interfaces including SPI, I2C, CAN, UART, and USB, and application-layer logic controlling electromechanical actuation and sensing. Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD, and other debugging tools to solve hardware/software integration problems at the bench. Own the structure, standards, dependencies, and long-term health of the embedded software codebase. Establish documentation, risk-management, and verification practices aligned with IEC 62304 and applicable FDA medical device requirements. Lead code and design reviews, mentor other engineers, and help establish a high technical bar across the embedded team. Own embedded software technical deliverables and risk mitigation from architecture and bring-up through verification and ongoing product support. Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline. 12+ years of embedded software development experience, preferably in a regulated or safety-critical industry. Expert-level proficiency in C and C++ for embedded systems. Deep experience with RTOS-based systems and embedded development workflows. Experience developing for ARM Cortex-M or comparable microcontroller platforms. Strong hardware-level debugging skills using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD. Direct experience integrating embedded software with complex electromechanical hardware. Experience leading technical architecture and mentoring experienced engineers while remaining an active contributor. Strong understanding of software quality systems, documentation control, risk management, and IEC 62304 or comparable regulated software-development requirements. Working knowledge of Git, JIRA, or similar version-control and issue-tracking systems. Experience with Python or C# is a plus. What Success Looks Like Within your first 3 to 6 months, you understand the existing embedded architecture, are contributing production code, and have taken ownership of significant technical decisions and integration work. Within your first year, you have materially improved the architecture, engineering practices, and reliability of the embedded platform while delivering software on active product programs. You are the person the team can turn to for difficult embedded and hardware/software integration problems, while still raising the technical capability of the engineers around you. Location & Work Arrangement This position is based at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston area, and is an on-site role. Visit our Candidate Journey page to learn what to expect from our hiring process. Salary Range$180,000—$220,000 USD
