Freight Rate Specialist

This vacancy is for a GS-2131-9, Freight Rate Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, SFLC ASSET LOGISTICS DIVISION • SFLC-ALD in BALTIMORE, Maryland. You will serve as a Freight Rate Specialist and be responsible for performing a combination of rating and classification duties. The incumbent determines the proper classification(s) and determines the legally applicable and most economical rates and routes for shipment of freight in accordance with published tariffs, tariff routings, and established policies and procedures. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Determining freight classification for commodities such as vessel or electronics parts and equipment; dangerous or hazardous articles; special security-risk materials; general store supplies; clothing; support equipment; outsized/overweight equipment and aids to navigation. Determining most economical rates and routes which are appropriate and legally applicable for the movement of domestic and foreign freight via all modes and combination of modes of transportation. Determining the appropriate cost effective carrier and mode to effect shipment arrangements that are nationwide and to foreign countries. Utilizing computer software applications for the preparation all pertinent transportation documentation such as bills of lading, customs declarations and hazardous certification. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position. A. Federal Acquisition Certification for Program and Project Managers Level I (FAC P/PM-I) or management determined equivalent within two years of entry into the position. Determine and evaluate economical rates and routes for shipment using all major modes and combinations of modes, for movement in the United States and worldwide from origin to final destination. Corresponding and relating to freight classifying, rating and shipping and coordinating reports with other traffic personnel.
