Assistant Nurse Manager (Supervisory)

The Assistant Nurse Manager serves as an assistant with line authority to the Emergency Department (ED) manager in providing leadership and direction to nursing staff. The Assistant Nurse Manager demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and creative approaches to management of complex care in the dynamic unpredictable setting of the emergency department. This RN is a nurse supervisor and provides oversight of unit scheduling and administration of leave, counseling and disciplinary action in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Acts as the Nurse Manager during time of Nurse Manager absences. Supports all Acute Care Hospital Operations (ACHO) and nursing initiatives and all other duties as assigned. RN responsibilities include: Responsible for administration and evaluation of program implementation, personnel management, and overall operations of the ED unit. Responsible for ensuring staff annual appraisals/proficiencies are monitored, initiated, communicated to employees, and completed on time as Rater and submitted in a timely manner 100% of the time with the exception of staff on unexpected leave for the 90 days prior to rating period ending. Provides leadership in improving and sustaining the quality and effectiveness of services to patients, applying professional practice and the Joint Commission Standards in the management of the ED. Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating care for a designated group of patients across the continuum of care: Recognizing the age related cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the adult and geriatric patient. Familiar with, and ensures staff compliance with, establish policies and procedures, administration of the Unit in accordance with VHA, VAPAHCS, TJC, OSHA, Infection Prevention, HR, CDC, VHA Privacy/HIPPA, National Patient Safety Guidelines, and ED policies and procedures. Provides leadership and collaborates with the team to improve and sustain the quality and effectiveness of services to patients in an interdisciplinary setting. Applies professional practice and The Joint Commission Standards to program development, analysis, and management. Promotes Evidence Based Practice in all clinical environments to provide / ensure optimal patient care outcomes. Ensures 100% of unit changes are evidence based, when literature is available to evaluate. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience and Certifications • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS provider card 2 years of ER experience 5 years of acute care experience Three years of RN experience in emergency department/ICU/Acute Care Current national certification as CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) or CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse) One year progressive leadership experience Possess Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification MSN in Nursing Administration or a related field Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I • An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II • A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III • Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
