Recreation Assistant

About the position: This position is Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Polar Bowl on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. This is a Regular Part-Time position. Regular Part-Time employees have regular/continuous work schedules of at least 20 hours to a max of 34 hours per week. Operates the bowling center customer service desk and lane-control console. Assigns lanes, processes customer transactions, rents bowling shoes and equipment, sells pro shop merchandise, and provides receipts and change in accordance with established cash-handling procedures. Provides customer service to facility patrons by explaining bowling center procedures, fees, programs, equipment use, facility rules, and scheduled activities. Demonstrates the proper use of bowling equipment and provides basic guidance and instruction on bowling techniques. Assists with the administration of bowling leagues, tournaments, special events, and open-play activities. Assists with advertising and participant recruitment; schedules activities; prepares lanes, equipment, and facility areas for programmed events; and ensures applicable rules and procedures are observed. May serve as league secretary or tournament director when assigned. Conducts inventories of pro shop merchandise, rental equipment, facility equipment, and other resale or supply items, as assigned. Assists with maintaining merchandise displays and reports stock shortages, damaged items, inventory discrepancies, and accountability concerns to the supervisor. Opens and closes the bowling center, as assigned. Performs facility readiness tasks, including ensuring customer service areas, rental equipment, and activity areas are prepared for operation. Reports equipment malfunctions, maintenance requirements, safety concerns, and facility discrepancies to the supervisor. May be required to assist with bar operations, including bar sales and customer service, when assigned. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualifying Experience: Experience that demonstrates the ability to provide customer service in a recreation, retail, hospitality, or similar environment is preferred. Experience handling cash, operating a point-of-sale system, maintaining accountability for funds or merchandise, and applying established cash-control procedures is preferred. Knowledge of bowling center operations, bowling rules, league and tournament procedures, bowling equipment, and lane-care procedures is preferred but may be obtained through on-the-job training. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with customers and coworkers; apply facility rules and procedures; perform basic arithmetic; and maintain tactful, professional customer-service relationships. Successful completion of all required pre-employment screening and background-investigation requirements applicable to the position is required. A Tier 1 investigation is required. Incumbents assigned duties involving the sale or service of alcoholic beverages must be at least 21 years of age and successfully complete and maintain all required alcohol-service training or certification. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
