Supervisory Pipefitter

This position is located at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center (CMCVAMC) in the Facilities Management Service under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. The Pipefitter is a key position in maintaining the safe, uninterrupted use of the plumbing and steam systems throughout of the facility, which are very complex, potentially dangerous, and critically needed resources for the Medical Center. The Pipefitter Supervisor has primary responsibility and control over the following trades: plumbing, pipefitting, steam fitting, machining, welding and brazing, burning and other related work. Work included but is not limited to the maintenance and repair and installation of the following systems: domestic water, critical water, water softeners, waste and vent, medical gas, fire pump and fire sprinkler, storm water, carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide, laboratory gas, natural gas, and mechanical hydraulics. The position is responsible for all components and equipment associated with the above listed systems inclusive of, but not limited to; hot water heaters, backflow preventers, pumping packages, expansion tanks, emergency showers, eye washes, medical gas equipment (compressors and vacuum pumps, area alarms, zone valves, manifolds, master alarm panels, outlets, etc.) laboratory compressors and vacuum pumps, fire pump and fire sprinkler system including both wet and dry systems post indicator valves, steam stations, pressure reducing valves, radiators, steam traps , valves, piping, fixtures (such as sinks, toilets, showers), etc. The incumbent will plan, supervise, and administer building operations, maintenance, repairs, and in-house renovation projects throughout the medical center. Incumbent provides oversight and compliance with all applicable codes, VA Directives, NFPA, Joint Commission, Office of Inspector General, OSHA, VISN Annual Workplace Safety Evaluation, and EPA requirements. Serves as a significant Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the review on project design utility drawings and specifications. Coordinates the input of subordinate trades/ sections during design reviews. Work Schedule: Monday • Friday; 7:30am • 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Supervisory Pipefitter/PD070620 Physical Requirements: Incumbent is frequently subject to very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous conditions. They must be in satisfactory physical and mental condition and always fit for duty. The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. They often work in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 80 pounds. Incumbent must possess valid state driver's license Working Conditions: Exposed to a full array of weather conditions. Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts. Exposed to dust/dirt. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Work is often dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, cramped spaces, and bad weather conditions. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and burns. They are subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin. Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable. The incumbent may be required to work overtime and subject to afterhours call back in the event of emergencies or other events that affect the medical center's ability to operate.
